The name Manaka'has is derived from a modern reinterpretation of a story often called “Rainbow Crow,” which tells of a bird who bravely brings fire to a freezing world, sacrificing its beauty and voice for the sake of others. While the tale is meaningful, Manaka'has and “Rainbow Crow” are not traditional Lenape figures, nor are they rooted in authentic Lenape oral tradition or language. Instead, the name originates from later fictional adaptations, which were intended to highlight the values of selflessness, courage, and quiet leadership — values that resonate deeply with our mission.
The Phoenix District spans a powerful and diverse region that includes Korea, China, Mongolia, and Hong Kong — lands with ancient traditions, storied civilizations, and vibrant histories of endurance, transformation, and rebirth. The phoenix itself is a symbol common to many of these cultures, representing renewal through fire, the cyclical nature of time, and the strength to emerge stronger after hardship.
In the Achpateuny Lodge and across the Far East Council, Manaka'has Chapter embraces this spirit. Like the Rainbow Crow and the phoenix alike, its members give of themselves to serve others, not for recognition, but to bring light, warmth, and strength to their communities.
